Your eyes can say a lot, from how you feel or whether you’re tired. People might interpret what you’re thinking, what your emotional state is and even have ideas about your personality because of the way your eyes look. As we get older, the skin ages and begins to sag and wrinkle around the eyes. The skin on the eyelids become lax and begins to droop. This causes the face to look tired, grouchy or older. In some cases, this can get to a point where the sight is even impaired. Additionally, puffy bags under the eyes can give you an exhausted appearance. While you might be feeling perfectly happy underneath, the sagging skin around your eyes tells a different story. If you’re ready to rejuvenate your eyelids, eyelid surgery might be an ideal procedure for you.

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, addresses sagging, drooping eyelid skin. There are different types of eyelid surgery which can focus on the upper eyelids or lower eyelids, or both at the same time. Upper eyelid surgery addresses the loose, drooping skin on and around the upper eyelids, while lower eyelid surgery resolves puffy bags under the eyes. Dr. Few performs eyelid surgery in Chicago at his private practice to tighten the skin and rejuvenate and refresh the eye area, thereby providing you with a younger, refreshed and happier appearance.

Benefits of eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery has many benefits for patients with drooping eyelids or heavy bags.

  • Reduction of eye bags or puffiness under the eyes
  • Better line of sight and improved field of vision
  • Less skin irritation from the rubbing of excess folds
  • A more youthful, refreshed, happy appearance

What Happens DuringThe Eyelid Surgery Procedure?

Preparing for surgery

To help prepare you for your eyelid surgery, we will provide a list of medications to avoid, including aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs or supplements. Because you won’t be able to drive yourself home after surgery, it’s important to arrange in advance for a friend or family member to drive you home and help you for 24 hours after the procedure.

The surgical procedure

Your blepharoplasty procedure will be done under local or monitored anesthesia. However, if you prefer, the procedure can be done under general anesthesia. Once the anesthesia has set in, Dr. Few will make a single incision in the natural crease of the upper or lower eyelid.

Eventually these incisions will fade into concealed scars. If you’re having lower eyelid surgery, the ligaments of the lower eyelid will be tightened, and the fat pouches that are causing puffiness and bags will be repositioned and contoured to provide a more youthful, smooth result.

If you’re having upper eyelid surgery, the extra, loose skin is removed and the eyelids are tightened, causing a rejuvenated appearance. Once your upper and/or lower eyelid surgical procedure is complete, the incision is closed with absorbable sutures or biological glues.

Recovery After Eyelid surgery

After eyelid surgery in Chicago with Dr. Few, most patients need to take about a week off from work. You will experience swelling and bruising that will reduce after the first couple of weeks. Wait ten days to two weeks before using contacts again. You can wear your glasses within a day of your surgery. Sleep on your back for one to two weeks after your procedure. Avoid strenuous exercise and exposure to the sun for three to four weeks.
